Tiffin Glass

Collectible Treasures : Episode COL-1109 -- More Projects »
Collector: Russ Gangloff

Location: Private residence

Featured Items: Bookends, paper weights, a pair of birds, and a very unusual-looking cat that is worth $1,000.

Details: Tiffin began production in 1889 out of the A.J. Beatty and Sons Glass Factory. Their specialty was high-quality pressed glass. In 1895 they merged with United States Glass, and the Tiffin Glass Corporation was born. It is the later blown ware that collectors desired. This glass came in an abundance of styles and more than 50 different colors. Here are some important things to know when shopping for Tiffin pieces:

  • Copen blue and wisteria are two colors in this line of glass.
  • Tiffin also made "silk" glass, which looks amazingly like fabric.
  • Clear, glossy Tiffin glass has a simple sheen.
  • The Empress Collection pieces are known for their two-tone color.
  • Empress pieces were made from 1959 to 1963.
  • The same molds that were used for the Empress collection were used again in the 1960s to make Empress look-alikes--but in solid colors.
  • The look-alikes are less valuable than the original Tiffin pieces. Some of the molds were sold to other companies that manufacture them today.
