Hubach Figures

Holiday collectibles encompass more than ornaments, trees and Santa. Here's one you might not think of. These are known as Hubach figures. They were produced in Germany around the turn of the century. The detail on these figurines is phenomonal. Here's a look at a few from the collection of Ann Henderson.

Hubach figures were manufactured in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th century. This example has a high value because it groups two figures together.

The Hubach figure on the left is a rare wind-up toy, while the one in the middle is a candy container.

Hubach figures are made of finely-crafted china, and some, like the one seen here, have glass eyes.

Hubach figure clothing is made of wool and cotton batting. These charming pieces range in value from $500 to $2,500.
Dresden Ornaments

These rare paper and cardboard ornaments were manufactured in the mid-19th century from the area of Dresden, Germany--hence the name. These ornaments come in three varieties--flat, one-dimensional pieces, 2-D pieces and the most fragile of all, ornate 3-D ornaments. Here's a look from the collection of Marilyn Curtis.

Dresden ornaments were created by pressing cardboard or paper through a handmade mold. Once molded, the pieces were handpainted.

Because of the fragility of these ornaments, only small quantities have survived, and finding the pieces today is often difficult.

Dresden ornaments were originally owned by the very wealthy. Even in the day of manufacturer, it was not unusual to pay between $5 and $10 apiece for them.

Unlike some blown-glass ornaments, Dresden ornaments can't be reproduced because no molds are known to exist.

Today, these one-of-a-kind works of art are worth thousands of dollars per piece.

Collector Marilyn Curtis displays her Dresden ornaments on this unusual, revolving tree stand from the mid-19th century. It's made of wood with a music box interior. It has 12 metal discs, each playing a different Christmas carol. Manufactured only for the wealthiest of families, if you're fortunate enough to find a stand such as this intact, the price will range from $1,200 to $1,500.
