Shelves full of monkeys
Imagine waking up to hundreds of eyes looking at you. Enid Westberg can. She owns 300 sock monkeys that keep watch over her. Seven years ago she discovered one at an antique shop. When she saw a second one she just had to have it, and the collection grew from there.

Her collection goes beyond just socks. She also has sock monkey lunch pails, plates and original artwork.

Sock monkeys originated around the 1920s and were made from men's work socks.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Garage sales and flea markets are your best place to find sock monkeys at a bargain price. A previously owned sock monkey can be found for about $2.

  • The average price for a new sock monkey is about $10, but a sock monkey with a custom-made outfit can set you back as much as $85.
