Raggedy Ann Collectibles

Patricia Hall has been collecting Raggedy Ann dolls and other related items for more than 40 years, and there is no stopping her. She owns about 500 dolls, close to a thousand different books, and hundreds of other pieces. As much as Patricia loved her first doll, she did not start collecting until years later. Her collection began with the books by Raggedy Ann creator Johnny Gruelle. It didn't take long for her to expand from books into everything Raggedy Ann.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

• Get to know the publishing companies that distribute Raggedy Ann material (figure A). Many Raggedy Ann and Johnny Gruelle books were released with the same title and cover, but by different publishing companies. Books can range anywhere from $35 to $500.

• Look for any merchandise made by the Johnny Gruelle Company in the 1940 to '50s. You can be certain that these authorized and licensed items are from 1939 to 1950. A Raggedy Ann or Andy doll made by Exposition (1935) with Johnny Gruell's autograph can be worth more than $6,000 (figure B).

• The P.F. Volland Company was the first purveyor of Raggedy Ann merchandise and took over manufacturing dolls from 1918 to 1934. Volland Company dolls start at $1,700 for Raggedy Ann or Andy and go on up to $2,800.
