Chinese Robe

Collectible Treasures : Episode COL-1101 -- More Projects »
Dealer: Paul Haig

Location: Portland Expo Show in Oregon

Details: This 19th-century Chinese robe's fabric is a tapestry of woven silk with a gold fret-work background. Amazingly it retains its vivid color, although it's about 150 years old. The design of the dragons, waves and rainbow help to date this robe. The cuff protects the hands while riding a horse. The robe also has an over-wrap front--convenient for riding horseback. The complexity of design, attention to detail and condition meant it probably would have been worn by a high- ranking official on special occasions. Because this robe is a pristine museum piece Haig says you can expect to pay $20,000.
