What started as a birthday gift 20 years ago is now an obsession. Collector Barbara Eddins is mesmerized by the grace of a flamingo. More than 2,000 flamingos roost in her home including a few in the front yard—flamingo water sprinklers, whirligigs and flappers. Flamingo collecting is affordable and fun. Here are some quick tips for starting your own collection.

• Vintage flamingo items from the 1950s have a great retro look and can be inexpensive to collect. You can find some '50s pieces online or at flea markets for $20 or less.
  
• Keep a look out for flamingo cross collectibles like Lladro figurines from 1999 to 2000--they are worth $600 and up.
  
• Flamingo art pottery is very desirable and can range in price from $50 to hundreds of dollars.
