Witch Lanterns Cast a Spell

Materials and Tools:

various metal paint pails (tall and short)
galvanized flower vase
sheet metal
leather gloves
drill
tin snips
two-part exterior epoxy
acrylic spray paints
rotary cutter (for metal)
black marker
tea lights
metal file
5-gallon bucket

Steps:

1. Draw the witch face on the paint pail using a black marker (make the lines wavy or crooked). Make sure that the mouth is at least an inch or so up from the bottom to hide a small tea light. Cut the pieces out using a rotary cutter and file the edges smooth.

2. To create the wide brim of the witch's hat, place a 5-gallon bucket on the sheet metal and trace around it. For the smaller inner circle, place the narrow part of the galvanized flower vase in the center; trace it, and then cut it out with tin snips. Work carefully as there are a lot of sharp edges.

3. Cut small venting holes in the hat using a rotary cutter. Attach the galvanized flower pot to the brim of the hat using epoxy. Let cure, and then attach the bottom face to the hat in the same fashion.

4. Paint the face and hat as desired. Let dry and set a tea light inside. For a spooky outdoor display, hang many lanterns from trees, porch hooks or ground stakes.
