- branch or log at least 6" in diameter
- variety of small succulents
- potting mix made specifically for cacti and succulents
- angle grinder
- wood-carving blade
- wood-carving clamps
- sanding block
- damp cloth
Search your yard for fallen branches or logs at least 6 inches in diameter. This minimum diameter will guarantee soil, roots and succulents have enough space to fit without being too cramped.
Clean Up and Smooth
To ensure the succulent log is easy to keep clean, remove any loose bark or splinters in the wood with a sanding block. Once the log is smooth, wipe with a damp cloth.
Using angle grinder fitted with a wood-carving blade, slowly remove the center of the log. Tip: To keep the log from moving around while grinding, hold it in place with clamps.
