How to Make a Glazed, Double-Sided Ceramic Pendant

Artist Jasna Sokolovic of Canada shares the process for creating her double-sided, glazed ceramic pendant.

Materials Needed:

• clay
• photocopy on newsprint paper
• ceramic under glazes
• white glaze
• paintbrushes
• ceramic pencil
• craft knife
• measuring triangle
• rolling pin

• rubber stamp
• sponge
• container of water
• silver wire
• silver necklace wire
• silver beads
• jewelry glue
• scissors

Steps:

1. Roll a small sheet of clay with a rolling pin. Measure and cut a small clay tile using a craft knife. Smooth the edges.

2. With a needle tool, make two holes in the top edge for stringing the necklace wire.

3. Rubber-stamp an image on one side of the tile.

4. Roughly cut around the photocopied image. Apply black under glaze over the image.

5. Press the image glaze side down onto the side of the tile opposite the stamped image. Use a wet sponge to dab the back of the paper to transfer it to the tile (Image 1).

6. Lift the paper image from the tile. The ink from the photocopy will resist the glaze and the image will transfer to the clay (Image 2).
