To make four placemats:

Materials Needed:

  • 4 old-fashioned linen hand towels or dish towels
  • an old tablecloth in gingham (optional)
  • scissors
  • pins
  • cotton thread and needle or sewing machine
  • interfacing

Step 1

Cut four oblong pieces, each 13 by 9 inches, from the interfacing, four from the hand towels, and four from the tablecloth.

Step 2

Align a piece of gingham and linen, correct sides facing each other. Place a piece of interfacing on the back of the linen. Pin together.

Step 3

Sew the three fabrics together with a seam of 1/2-inch around the edges. Leave a gap along one side to turn the fabric the right way round.
