Easy-to-Craft Handmade Jewelry Box
Turn inexpensive fence-post caps into a pretty jewelry or gift box. By itself, the box makes a thoughtful birthday, Mother's Day or holiday gift. Fill it with sweet treats or a small trinket for a handmade gift they won't soon forget.

Materials Needed:
- 4-inch-square wood fence-post caps (1 raised and 1 flat)
- spray paint with built-in primer or spray wood stain
- drawer knob or any small item you'd like to use as a handle
- sandpaper (medium- and fine-grit)
- super glue or any non-foaming, clear-drying adhesive
Sand Fence-Post Caps
Head to your local hardware store for fence-post caps, one flat and one raised (Image 1). Thanks to the flat cap's stepped design, it fits nicely inside the raised cap to create a lid (Image 2). Remove paper labels and lightly sand caps to smooth imperfections (Image 3).
Apply Spray Paint or Stain
Coat box's lid and base with either spray paint or stain. To prevent drips or runs, apply in thin coats using a smooth, controlled motion, slowly moving the can from side to side (Image 1). If painting, multiple coats will be necessary. If staining, two coats should be sufficient (Image 2). Be sure to allow adequate dry time between coats. Tip: Use a spray paint with built-in primer to save the priming step.

Add Handle
Once paint or stain have fully dried, add a knob to the box's lid to function as a handle. The flat fence-post cap is designed to accommodate a finial so drilling a hole isn't necessary — just screw on a knob (Image 1). Or get creative and substitute an object that has sentimental meaning to the gift's recipient like a shell for beach lovers, or an interesting button or piece of costume jewelry for fashionistas. To add the object, use a toothpick to apply glue to any areas that will be in contact with the lid (Image 2) then set the lid aside to allow the glue to fully harden (Image 3).
