Materials Needed:

  • 1/2" MDF from any hardware store, cut into 16"x24" (for one brag board)
  • white latex paint and brush
  • chipboard letters from any craft supply store
  • coral acrylic paint and brush
  • silhouette cameo, painter’s tape or a chevron stencil
  • grey acrylic paint
  • glue gun
  • epoxy
  • metal clip
  • saw-tooth hangers

Paint Board and Letters

Start with a piece of 1/2? MDF from a home improvement store. Cut the boards into the desired size – the boards in this project are 16?x24?. Begin by painting a base coat on the MDF board. Latex paint provides a good base coat when painting on MDF because it tends to soak up spray paint.

Start painting the letters while the MDF board is drying. Chipboard letters are perfect for the brag board.

Create Chevron Effect

Let the letters dry and begin on the pattern for the brag boards. To create the chevron look stick jagged rows of painter's tape to the board. You can also use a store bought stencil to create the pattern.

Once the chevron pattern is in place, paint two coats of acrylic grey paint on the board. Let the paint dry for a few minutes and then remove the tape by pulling on the excess tape on the edge of the board.

Add Texture

After the paint has dried completely use an 80 grit sanding block to add a roughed up texture to the board.
