The homeowners live in a newly developed community and love their home, but are not satisfied with the landscaping. When the community was under construction, the area was completely cleared of trees and foliage to make room for houses. As with many subdivisions, the front and back yards are nondescript and offer little privacy. Understandably, the homeowners would prefer an aesthetically pleasing yard in addition to having a play area for the kids. Landscape architect Hayne Thompson of Environmental Planning Group develops a new plan for the homeowners to make the yard more interesting and useful. First, he replaces the concrete walkway with a paver walkway and the existing plant beds on either side of the walkway are reshaped. Hayne adds a 900-square-foot patio off the back of the house to extend out from under an existing deck on the second story and adds a connector from the new patio to the deck and stairway. To make the yard more private, he installs a stone wall on the left side of the house extending to and enclosing the patio, and adds two dry creek beds are installed on each side of the backyard to solve the drainage problem. The homeowners now have a beautiful yard for entertaining and a private play area for the children.
