To build the color story and create an oasis of calm, Woodrum first focused her attention on the luxurious queen-sized bed, outfitting it with a headboard crafted from wood scraps by carpenter David Brown, padded and upholstered in organic linen to match the box-pleated duster. Next came layers of luxe textiles – including an organic maletesse duvet cover and shams by West Elm, cotton pillow covers by John Robshaw and a French-style crewelwork pillow by Bliss Studio. An open invitation to cuddle up is offered by a rattan tray at the foot of the bed that holds satin PJs and rests atop a cable-knit, cotton-rayon throw blanket by A Soft Idea. Windows, which flank the bed and offer a scene-stealing view of the screened patio, are dressed in bamboo shades and lined hemp drapes and shine a spotlight on parson-style side tables, custom-crafted by carpenter David Brown. Each tabletop holds a locally sourced driftwood lamp and a collection of seaside treasures: potted orchids, decorative vases by Emissary Home & Garden, reading material and resin coral-shaped bowls. A shelf below each table offers additional space to stow rattan storage bins and a few more treasures including a Moravian star lantern, mercury-glass pinecones and framed photos. A wool-like nylon rug cushions every footstep, and an Energy Star-rated, brushed-steel ceiling fan keeps a cool breeze circulating through the space.
Two bleached oak fretwork-framed mirrors, which flank the entrance to the master bathroom, pop against the sky-blue walls and seem to elevate the otherwise casual space. The adjacent sitting area, which faces the bed, is framed by two reclaimed shelves chock-a-block with sea-inspired treasures, framed photos and silver accents and topped with resin wood-grain chalices finished in a frosty white. Linen-covered lounge chairs provide the perfect spot to chat and enjoy refreshments, which find a home on the ceramic garden seat. Light from the picture window makes daytime reading an option, and gourd-style table lamps on the faux-shagreen console table provide ample light to read into the wee hours of the morning. To break up the intense blue color theme and add a bit of whimsy, Woodrum completed the informal space with dendrobium orchids and a collection of yellow-glass beetles.
“It’s the ultimate spa retreat,” adds Woodrum. “The colors are directly related to the glorious water of the local beaches and this suite really takes you away. It feels peaceful and relaxed but definitely sophisticated in a wonderfully casual way.”
