Mary Lloyd and David Lay have a turf war going on in their garden in Kilmarnock, Va. David likes rhododendrons, azaleas, Japanese maples and rare understory trees and shrubs. Mary Lloyd likes perennials. He doesn't care about color and puts reds next to pinks. He plants things, and Mary goes behind him and takes them out. Despite their differences, they have a great time working in their 21-year-old, five-acre woodland garden overlooking a river that flows to the Chesapeake Bay.
