Grandma Carr owned and lived in the Barney house for nearly 40 years in the first half of the 20th century. Each Christmas, the historic Commodore Joshua Barney House Bed and Breakfast bakes and shares her delicious sugar cookies.
Recipe courtesy of her granddaughter Jeanette Vollmerhausen and the Commodore Joshua Barney House.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 Tbs. vanilla
2 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
Directions:
In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
In a second bowl, combine and mix well the flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Stir flour into butter mixture 1 cup at a time. Chill dough for 3 to 4 hours.
Roll out dough and cut into shapes with cookie cutters or a knife. Bake on a sheet pan or a parchment lined sheet pan in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 10 to 15 minutes depending on the size of the cookie. Remove cookies to a rack to cool completely.
