HGTV Dream Home 2013 Daybed
Materials Needed:
- Electric drill
- 1" spade bit
- 3/8" drill bit
- 1/4" drill bit
- 1/8" drill bit
- Circular saw
- Tape measure
- Hammer
- 9/16" socket wrench
- Pencil
- Wood glue
- Wood filler
- 4 blocks of 2x4 cut into 8" lengths
- 3 (2" x 6" x 8') yellow pine boards
- 3 (1" x 1 1/2" x 8') lumber
- 4' x 8' sheet of 1/2" plywood
- 8 (3/8" x 4") lag bolts with washers
- 4 (1/2" x 6") threaded eye bolts
- 4 (5/16" x 4 7/8”) eye bolts that attach into the ceiling
- 8 (1/2") washers to fit eye bolts
- 8 quick-connect chain connectors
- 4 (3/16") chain cut to length for desired height of bed
Step 1
Cut two of the 2' x 6' x 8' boards to a length of 73”. Cut the remaining board into two 39"-long pieces. Lay out the previously cut boards to ensure that the outside edge of the platform frame measures 76" x 39".
Step 2
Draw a line 3/4 inches in from the edge of each 39" board. Along this line, mark a dot 1 1/4 inches below the top edge and 1 1/4 inches above the bottom edge of each board. Repeat this process for all four corners of the frame. With the spade bit and working at each dot, drill a 1-inch hole to a depth of 1/4 inch; drill a 3/8-inch hole through the center of the 1-inch hole. Repeat this process for all four corners of the frame. Lag bolts will go through these holes and attach to the long sides of the platform.
Step 3
Line up the rails and insert lag bolts with washers in holes. With a hammer, tap the bolts to make dimples at pilot-hole locations. With a 1/4" bit, drill pilot holes. Repeat this process for all four corners of the frame. Insert and tighten down all eight lag bolts with washers to create the frame.
Step 4
Using wood glue and nails and working 1/2 inch from the top edge of the 2x6s, attach 1 1/2" wood strips along the inside edge of the frame. After the wood strips are attached, take a measurement of the inside platform. The dimensions should be approximately 73" x 36" or large enough to accommodate the 1/2-inch piece of plywood.
Step 5
Glue and screw an 8" wood block in each inside frame corner against the 39" boards. Working out 6 inches from each end and on center, drill a 1/2-inch hole in each 2x6 and through the blocks. Insert a 1/2" eye bolt with washer in each hole.
Step 6
Glue and nail the 1/2-inch piece of plywood in place. Note: Plywood should be flush with the top of the 2x6s.
Step 7
Use wood filler to conceal lag bolts. Sand the platform completely, prime the surface and paint.
Step 8
To support the weight of the bed, block in the ceiling or locate floor/ceiling joists. Mark the ceiling above the four corners of the bed. Drill pilot holes into the ceiling. Screw eye bolts into the ceiling. Determine the chain or rope length to finish the mattress 24 inches off of the floor.
