The Elements of a Happy Living Room
Tanika Ray, host of HGTV'd, tells HGTV Magazine what she loves most about her sun-splashed L.A. living room.
"Initially I painted the walls cobalt blue, but I felt like I was drowning. Forty-five minutes later I went running back to the paint store. The moment I stumbled on this golden yellow shade, Burmese Gold by Dunn-Edwards, I knew I’d hit the jackpot."
"I went to fashion school 13 years ago, and that’s when I got this dress form. I give it a new look every time I change the pillows on the couch."
"The blue chair is from IKEA. We used it on the Ellen DeGeneres episode of HGTV’d. The color is what grabbed me at first—it’s just magical. Then I sat in it and was like, fuhgettaboutit."
"My sister-in-law is Chinese, and I always have to take off my shoes in her house. I really like that idea and decided to adopt it in my own place, too. My home is my sanctuary. Don’t bring the outside mess inside. Plus, I have a white shag rug in the TV room."
"The painting was a gift to myself after I got a promotion. It looks like a girl with big curly hair, like mine, leaning against a ballet bar, stretching. I’ve been dancing since I was 3 years old. When I saw it, I started to tear up, and I knew it had to be mine."
3 a.m. Cleaning
"I’ve been known to go on middle-of-the-night cleaning binges. I don’t turn on the TV or put any music on. While the whole city is asleep, I can find some clarity. When I’m done, I miraculously pass out. In the morning I wake up to a clean house!"
"One of my favorite get-togethers is a party with my girlfriends where I put acrylic paints and little canvases out around the room. Everyone’s nervous at first and says they don’t know how to paint, but if you just sit down with a brush like you did when you were 5, you’ll come out with a masterpiece."
"This was an old grandma couch with dingy floral upholstery. I found it at a consignment shop, and because the wood was in fantastic condition, I had it recovered in Italian silk."
