Homemade Storage Cabinet

This cabinet accomplishes two tasks at once -- storing wine and serving as a buffet table. Learn how to make one using a biscuit joiner and router.

Materials and Tools:

biscuit joiner
wood biscuits
router
1x3 and 1x10 lumber
wood glue
glue brush
rubber mallet
clamps
circular saw
wine racks (World Market)

Steps:

1. This cabinet has five shelves with a center divider and two end dividers per shelf. To construct the shelves, which are 18 to 19 inches wide for wine storage, place two boards together edge to edge and make pencil marks every eight inches. Set the joiner in position and cut the slots along the edges at each mark on both boards. Brush glue into the slots and along the edge of both boards, and insert a biscuit into each slot along one board.

2. Push the boards together using a rubber mallet if necessary, and then clamp them in place. Secure two more boards together in the same way to create shelf supports/dividers. Once dry, cut the boards to length using a circular saw.

3. To make a strong bond between the pieces, use a router to make a dado (groove) across each shelf, which will let you slide the support pieces into the groove. To rout the dado, build a jig as wide as the shelves out of 1x3s just wide enough for the router base. Clamp it into position and use a 3/4-inch straight bit attached to the router to cut the dado across the shelf. Apply glue along the groove and the support boards, and then clamp them together to dry.
