Bohemian-Chic Living Room

A makeover takes this space from eclectic to cozy and cohesive.

Before: Complete Wreck

The unique collection of furniture and accessories was pulling this living room in too many directions. This ornate — and broken — Chinese cabinet holding the TV was totally out of place along the wall separating the kitchen and the dining room, while a small stereo unit seemed to cower over in a corner.

After: Warm and Inviting

After a makeover, the room is warm and inviting, unified by the new red theme with gold accents. The TV cabinet has been repaired and given new life as a rolling bar, complete with red and animal-print shelving inside. Pull it out, turn it around and you’re the bartender. Curtains on either side of the cabinet serve as a divider for the adjacent rooms, and new bar stools create extra seating. Fabric draped from the ceiling anchors the wall art at right and is an unexpected touch.

Before: Awkward Seating Area

The couch was completely chewed up under the slipcover, thanks to the owner’s dog, and the air-conditioning unit above the bookcase was just plain ugly. Speaking of the bookcase, it’s a piece the homeowner wanted to keep because she and her stepfather built it together.

After: New Color Scheme

The now-cozy sitting area boasts a great new couch that matches the color scheme, a chandelier with customized lampshade and dramatic drapes. A simple wooden box was built to camouflage the air conditioner, and it’s covered with groovy yet inexpensive wallpaper.
