Repair Icemaker With Ease

Here's how to repair an icemaker by replacing the water supply valve.

Materials and Tools:

screwdriver
nut driver
adjustable wrench
towel
replacement valve for icemaker water supply
plumber's tape

Steps:

1. First get out your owner's manual and go through the troubleshooting list to see if you might not just have the thing turned off or something.

2. Pull off the end cap of the icemaker and make sure the gears are in good shape and there are no broken pieces.

3. Check the water supply reservoir in the back of the freezer to see if you're getting enough water. If not, if the water supply valve is clogged, you'll have to replace it.

4. Turn off the water supply at the main and drain water from a faucet.

5. Unplug your refrigerator and carefully pull out from the wall. Get help so you don't hurt yourself.

6. Remove the access panel in the back. Use a screwdriver, nut driver or adjustable wrench ... whatever's called for.

7. Unplug the electrical connection to the water supply valve.

8. Disconnect the copper water supply tube to the valve using an adjustable wrench. Next remove the valve itself. Disconnect the ground screw and the water line leading to the icemaker.

9. Wrap plumber's tape around the threads of the water inlet and outlet on the new valve.

10. Install the new valve by reversing the steps you used to remove the old one. Turn the water back on and check all connections for leaks. Replace the panel on your refrigerator.
