Traditional Kitchen Island

In the kitchen, a freshly painted kitchen island can bring a customized style to the space and really liven up the room.

If you want to paint your kitchen island but aren't sure what color to choose, there are many different directions you could go. First, take note of the other colors in your kitchen and figure out the look you're trying to achieve.

If you want to keep the room fairly neutral, choose a subtle shade for your island such as cream, beige, greige or a subtle pastel shade. If you're willing to be more adventurous, a bold shade can really shine on a kitchen island. Since the island is a focal point in the room, a striking shade can ground the space and make the room feel fun and inviting. Some colors that would work well with a kitchen island include yellow, turquoise, navy blue, orange and red. Lighter colors such as blue, gray and mint can really shine too. Whichever color you choose, make sure it's one you really love and won't grow tired of over time.

Painting a kitchen island is a big project, but the final result will be worth it. Before you begin painting, you'll need to remove all the hardware from the cabinets on your island. Store the hardware you remove from each drawer or cabinet in a separate plastic bag and label them to speed things up when it comes time to reassemble everything. This will also prevent you from losing any important nails or screws.

After you've removed the hardware, wipe and clean the cabinets to remove any grease, dust or other grime. Once you've finished wiping down the cabinets, sand them lightly to create a slightly roughened surface for your paint to stick to. You'll then want to remove all the drawers and drawer fronts from the island. Use masking paper to cover the interior, floor and countertop. Next you'll want to caulk any seams between the panels and doorframes; fill any holes with wood filler. Let the wood filler dry, then sand it until it is flush with the cabinet's surface. Wipe the cabinetry clean once again to remove any traces of dust.

Before you begin painting, apply an oil-based primer to all of the surfaces and let it dry for 24 hours. Once it's dry, use a sanding pad to remove any visible brush marks and wipe cabinetry clean. Using oil-based paint, apply two coats of paint, letting each one dry for 24-36 hours. You can also lightly sand the surfaces before applying the second coat. Let the paint dry for 48 hours before removing the masking paper and reinstalling the drawers, door fronts and hardware.
