A large island under a vaulted ceiling and range hood make the most of a spacious kitchen.

When the homeowners found their 5,000-square-foot Manhattan loft, they decided to take full advantage of its enormity and build an open, airy kitchen.

With the help of architect Joseph Tanney, they were able to create a space that has become the hub of the entire loft. It is informal enough to accommodate family life, but it’s also large enough to entertain a crowd.

The large island is the focal point of the kitchen. It measures 4 feet by 12 feet. Because of its overwhelming size, it can hold lots of additional storage underneath. The top is made from honed granite for a clean, elegant look. One of the most convenient features is the hidden electrical outlets on the surface.

With so much room, the homeowners decided to add lots of cooking capacity. The microwave, warming drawer and large capacity oven are all one unit, but there is also a second oven built right into the island.

In such a creative home, it is no surprise that the ceiling is a masterpiece of its own. The angular design element on the vaulted ceiling holds the range hood, overhead lighting and exhaust fans.

What makes the kitchen a true work of art is how it seamlessly flows into the rest of the apartment. There is a repetition of materials that makes each area blend into one another. Elements such as stainless steel, frosted glass and black metals are used throughout the entire home. The use of frosted glass on the walls and doors creates an airy feeling.
