Formal Elegance Fills Kitchen

Architectural touches, luxury details make this kitchen a showplace.

White cabinetry and dramatic molding details give a formal feel to this spacious Colonial kitchen.

Karen Forlenza wanted more space, light and defined areas of functioning for the kitchen of her Colonial home. She worked with architect John MacDonald to create a large, flowing plan that enlarged the home's footprint with a windowed circular bump-out for the dining nook and a living area directly off the kitchen.

Functional, organized niches are located around the kitchen's perimeter, so that traffic flows around the main work area. The butler's pantry has mahogany cabinets, dark granite counter, copper sink and stainless dishwasher. The wet bar has a nickel sink and wine refrigerator. White cabinetry and medium tone granite is used. Next to the wet bar is the third niche, a built-in desk and office area.

Beautiful trim details distinguish the kitchen and living areas. Wide elaborate crown molding tops the cabinets and connects them directly to the ceiling. The cabinetry and molding share the same material, line, detail and color, so they look like an integrated unit.

The ceiling is coffered with gleaming white beams. Arches and columns are used to define spaces, while curved cabinetry around the perimeter of the work space echoes the rounded shapes of the columns, arches and round walls of the breakfast nook.

A long counter that seats four separates the kitchen work area from the corridor. It is located under an arch and houses an under-counter microwave and storage for snack foods so that younger family members can help themselves without interfering with the main work space.

The breakfast nook is located in the curved bump-out filled with patio doors on all sides. The curved lines of the architecture are echoed in the round table and area rug, as well as the curved shape of the dining chairs.

Inset halogen lighting generously distributed in the coffered ceiling give a uniform glow to the work space. Simple white pendant lights add definition to work spaces.

The cabinetry for the perimeter of the work space is a painted inset, raised panel style with satin nickel hardware. The island cabinetry, which has the look of unfitted furniture, is dark mahogany to contrast with the ivory used elsewhere. The countertops are all granite, although different colors and patterns are used in different areas of functioning.

The oak wood flooring, laid in an oversized chevron pattern, is stained a dramatic deep brown.

Two oversized sinks are located in the main work space - one in the island, and another in the run of counter near the stove. The butler's pantry and wet bar also have smaller, more decorative sinks of copper and nickel.
