Kristine and Tom Hall renovated the contemporary kitchen in their colonial home to be a warm, inviting backdrop to the antiques they both love to collect and display.

A peninsula was removed so the kitchen flows seamlessly into the eating area. It was replaced with a green painted custom-built island designed to provide storage and beautiful display for antique collections of ironstone and baskets. Poplar, which takes paint nicely, is used for the base, and the top is made of stained antique pine boards.

To save money, the neutral ceramic tile floor was kept, and standard residential appliances were used. Plans were shelved for double wall ovens, a sink in the island and new location for the refrigerator because of their expense.

Money was gladly spent on the honed granite counters, which have a worn, rustic Old World look.

Country touches that make such a comfortable background for the antiques include a beadboard splash for counters and on the island, an antique brass gooseneck faucet, white undermount farm sink, antique brass chandelier and hardware.

The shade of green used for display cabinets was chosen to harmonize with the colors of the various antiques. The window over the sink is accented with a wooden arch and columns.

The new cabinetry was another high ticket item. The custom inset cabinetry has a warm wood tone. Upper cabinets on either side of the sink have divided glass panels. To achieve an Old World look, the cabinets were distressed, with wearing at the edges. Stacked crown molding finishes the tops of cabinets, which go to the ceiling, and beadboard was used for the back wall of the cabinets.
