Tools and Materials:

one stock cabinet
beadboard
two pieces of decorative corner molding
two newel posts
two different colors of paint and paintbrushes
butcher block (we used one made from bamboo)
four 2” steel casters (weight rating over 100lbs.)
3/4” medium-density fiberboard (MDF)
nail gun and 1” nails
screw gun and 2” screws
heavy-duty wood glue
circular saw and table saw

Steps:

1. Cut a piece of MDF to fit the exact dimensions of the top of your cabinet. Attach the piece to the cabinet using wood glue and nails.

2. Using a table saw, cut the beadboard to the length and width of the back of your cabinet. Cut two more pieces to fit to the sides of the cabinet.

3. Paint the newel posts and corner moldings. We painted ours yellow to match the accent color in our kitchen. Paint the cabinet and beadboard, we painted ours white. Let them dry completely.

4. Attach the beadboard flush, to the back and sides of the cabinet using wood glue and nails.

5. Attach the 2” steel casters per the manufacturer’s instructions to the bottom of the cabinet. Place one in each corner, one inch away from each edge.

6. Flip the cabinet upside-down and set it down on the underside of the butcher block, making sure that the doors are facing out. From the inside of the cabinet, screw the top of the cabinet to the bottom of the butcher block using 2” screws.

7. Attach the corner moldings to the two corners at the back of the cabinet using 1” nails.

8. Cut two square pieces from the MDF to sit in between the newel post and butcher block. We made ours 5”x5”. Your posts may be a different size, so these pieces should be large enough to completely mount and support the posts.

9. Measure the height of the posts plus the thickness of the MDF. It needs to match the height of the cabinet so your table will sit evenly. You may have to cut down the posts or add a second layer of MDF.

10. Paint the MDF to match the posts and let dry completely. Using 2” screws, fasten the MDF onto the top of each newel post.

11. Flip the posts upside down and attach the post through the MDF to the underside of the butcher block using 2” screws. Leave three inches of space from each edge of the butcher block.

12. Flip it over and you’ve got a heavy duty, maneuverable table/island.
