Materials and Tools:

table saw
medium-density fiberboard (MDF)
wood glue
nail gun
jig saw
chop saw
reclaimed lumber (to use for several 1x6 boards — enough to surround the base — as well as for 4x4 posts)
router
palm sander
sandpaper discs
gel stain (Walnut - Minwax)
various rags
two dowels
paddle bit
polyurethane
small paint roller
small roller pad
cordless screw gun
screws

Steps:

1. Use a table saw to cut down medium-density fiberboard (MDF) to make a base for the bed. Put together a box made out of the MDF, securing first with wood glue and then a nail gun.

2. Use a jig saw to cut out a slight arch in the bottom of the base so that the piece doesn't look too boxy.

3. Use a chop saw to cut down the 1x6 reclaimed boards and then wrap the MDF box with those boards, lining them up vertically, side by side. Securing each board first with wood glue and then with a nail gun. Use a router to finish notching out the arch detail on the bottom.

4. Use a palm sander to sand off all the rough parts of the wood. Use rags to stain the entire piece as well as the two dowels. Set aside the dowels for later.

5. Again with the chop saw, cut four 4x4 posts all the same height. Anderson made his seven feet tall to accommodate the canopy that will rest above the piece. Screw the posts onto the each of the corners of the daybed.

6. Attach a paddle bit to the cordless screw gun and drill holes for the dowels front to back between the two left posts and the two right posts. Slide dowels into the posts, securing with wood glue.

7. Administer one coat of polyurethane to seal the daybed. Insert a twin mattress, and swag the canopy over the dowels.
