Creative Kid's Bathroom

Parents know the bathroom can be a battleground for kids. Either you're cajoling a toddler into the tub or arguing with a preteen over the hours they spend in front of the mirror.

Try turning the battleground into a playground with the ultimate kids' bathroom. It won't make the tots wash up and the older kids preen faster, but it will make the whole process a lot more fun. Here's how.

Toilet Fun

Let your creative juices flow — there are so many ways to incorporate your overall theme into the bathroom.

Play it safe with fixtures: Savvy parents choose classic colors and designs that will stand the test of time for toilets, countertops and vanities. If one of the kids using the room is very young, and there's room for a double sink, consider a two-level countertop that puts one sink in reach for the tinier tot. Make sure your ultimate kids' bathroom also has safe stepstools so that youngsters can easily reach what they need.

Have fun with accessories: Whether you have a preschooler hooked on Dora the Explorer or an older child obsessed with anime heroes, today's gotta-have-it icon will be passé before you know it. Indulge your child's taste for cartoon characters and other themes with fun and funky shower curtains, rugs, linens, wastebaskets and other accessories. These items add a lot of design fun, but are easy to swap out for the next "flavor of the month."

Chalkboard Walls

Try using chalkboard paint on the walls for plenty of changing art that will keep your design fresh and ever changing.

Keep it tidy: Young kids accumulate scores of plastic tub toys, action figures and picture books. Teens seem to gather enough hair and skin products to open their own salons. The ultimate kids' bath includes plenty of cubbies, bins, cabinets and other storage to make it easy for kids to keep their own space tidy. Don't forget hampers for clothes and towels.

Let creativity out to play: Kids' creativity in the bathroom doesn't have to stop with the shampoo mohawk. Cover a wall with chalkboard paint and keep a bucket of sidewalk chalk handy for your budding artists; take photos of any favorite creations so kids can erase and start over. Older kids can use the chalkboard wall for more sophisticated creations, calendar notes or even Mom and Dad's reminders to clean the bathroom.

Colorful Curtain

Play up the bathroom with bright bold colors incorporated into everything from art to shower curtain.

Get wired: For some kids, keeping the bathroom fun means media, including a TV. Essential for those preschooler screenings of Once Upon a Potty, a TV with DVD player can help keep young kids in the tub long enough to actually get clean. Don't forget the sound system: Kids love their tunes just as much as adults.

Stay safe: A hazardous bathroom is no fun for anyone. Keep all medicines out of the kids' bathroom, install GFCI outlets to prevent electric shock, and make sure all kids using the room know and follow basic safety rules.
