Tools and Materials:

finish nailer, air compressor and hoses
miter saw and a table saw
safety glasses
speed square and a tape measure
router
piano hinges
2-1/2” shut-off valves
three sheets of 3/4” oak plywood
four boards of 1x6x8 oak lumber
half-round lumber
one sheet of 1/4” veneer plywood for the door panels
3/4” decorative molding
four sheets of 1/2” drywall, drywall tools, drywall tape and joint compound

Steps:

1. If removing a bathtub/shower, turn off the main valve water. Demo the tile and drywall to get down to the wall studs. Remove the tub and the faucet then install shut-off valves.

2. Install drywall where tile was removed. Tape the seams and apply joint compound. Let dry completely.

3. Sketch a design for the cabinet and make a cut-list from the sketch. We made an upper cabinet a separate lower cabinet. Cut all the wood using the table saw for long rips and the circular or miter saw for crosscuts. Assemble the upper cabinet using glue and the finish nailer. The lower cabinet is built in place.

4. Cut the frames from the 1x6 for the cabinet doors. Use a router to cut a groove into the frame pieces to hold the panel. Assemble the frame with glue and nail gun leaving the top open. Cut the plywood panel to size then slide it into the three-piece frame. Attach the last frame piece with glue and nail gun. Cut out the holes for the door hinges. Clamp and leave to dry. Repeat for the other door.

5. We built our lower cabinet in place. Fasten ledger boards to the wall at the studs. Cut the front piece of the lower cabinet to size and nail it to the ledger boards.

6. Cut the top piece of the lower cabinet to size. Cut the decorative edge to the correct length then use a nail gun to fasten it on to the outer edge of the top piece.

7. We created two hinged openings in the top of our lower cabinet to serve as hampers. Measure and mark for the hinged openings. Cut out the openings then sand the edges smooth. Fasten the piano hinges to top piece and to the cut-out piece.

8. Install the top piece of the lower cabinet by nailing it on to the ledger boards all around the edges.

9. Place the upper cabinet on top and attach it to the lower cabinet with the nail gun. Cover the edges and nail holes with the quarter-round lumber cut to size.

10. Prime and paint the sanded drywall surrounding the cabinet.

11. Stain the cabinet then apply a coat of polyurethane.

12. Attach the upper cabinet doors with adjustable screws.
