3 Budget-Friendly Facelifts

If you’re looking to upgrade your outdoor space but don’t want to spend a lot of cash, we have three makeovers inspired by three different countries — Mexico, France and Morocco — to help get some ideas flowing. We used existing furniture and simply added accessories, plants and curated decor to completely transform the look of this patio.

Before: Versatile Basics

Start off with a few key pieces, and don’t be afraid to use the furniture you already have. Double-duty pieces are always a great idea too, such as these two wicker stools that can also be used as side tables or put together as one coffee table.

Look #1: Mexico

Bright colors, patterns and cacti all work together to create a patio inspired by the vibrant spirit of Mexico. Layered rag rugs and a traditional chiminea also help to set the scene.

Lively Accents

Fun details bring some personality and vibrancy to the outdoor space. A colorful pom pom garland is simply strung across a vintage easel and paired with a large succulent plant. On chilly nights you can hang cozy blankets on the rungs of the easel to switch up the look even more.

Multifunctional Furniture

Small wicker stools also work as side tables for serving drinks and snacks. Don’t be afraid to bring some of your indoor decor outside (if weather permits), like this fab small faux fur pillow or this indigenous concrete statue.

Statement Pieces

Include a few standout pieces in your outdoor decor. This faux cattle head acts as a piece of outdoor art when simply leaned against the wall next to some colorful pillows and succulents. A large vintage wooden bowl serves as a faux planter for a cactus.

Authentic Details

Reinforce the design and style of your patio with carefully curated details like these trays, which feature unique Mexican tiles and pair perfectly with our DIY tile coasters. Learn how to make these easy coasters >>

Hardy Plants

Use plants of all sizes as decor. Pick up inexpensive baskets at the thrift store and simply drop some small plants and cacti in the baskets. You can then put the baskets all around your space to bring some lushness and life to your patio.

Look #2: South of France

Soft creams and yellows, baskets overflowing with flowering plants and beautiful floral patterns call to mind the relaxed, yet chic style in the South of France. Use a natural sisal or jute rug to let the colors and patterns of your decor pop.

Inviting Textures

Easily create a French-inspired vibe with textiles, pillows and wicker decor. Use a tablecloth on your existing side table. Large Euro shams are perfect to use on Euro pillows, and can easily be switched out and washed.

Vintage Baskets

Vintage picnic baskets stacked around your space will create a unique and collected feel. Lavender plants smell delicious and will bring a lovely pop of color.

Delicate Touches

Floral linen napkins and delicately ruffled bowls and dishes are another great choice for creating the French vibe. Simple bud vases with delicate flowers will look great on your faux table, created with the two wicker stools.

Soft Palette

Whitewashed terra-cotta pots and ceramic pitchers work together to set the scene. Start out with a few creamy pillows and add to your collection over time. Yellow and blue is a classic color scheme that also feels very French. Learn how to whitewash terra-cotta pots >>

Pretty Flowers

Flowering plants peeking out of a basket is an easy addition to make to any outdoor space. Purchase a number of plants and group them together inside a basket, and use them in several spots around your patio. A simple small chair is an easy addition to any of your existing furniture.

Look #3: Morocco

Tassels, fringe and metallic lanterns all call to mind the magic of the Moroccan desert.

Lush Layers

Moroccan-style poufs are an easy way to transform the look of your space. Pair them with plush pillows and a variety of throws to create a comfortable outdoor oasis.

Easy Embellishment

Add tassels to baskets filled with pillows and extra throws to carry through the Moroccan vibe. Full, lush plants work particularly well with this style as well. Learn how to make easy DIY tassels >>

Plenty of Pillows

Pillows adorned with pom poms and tassels are a Moroccan mainstay. Double-sided pillows (colorful on one side and neutral on the other) allow for complete flexibility in your outdoor space.

Cozy Throws

Use vintage pieces of fabric or throws to cover your outdoor seating to create some extra style layers. Again, the wicker stools work perfectly as a makeshift coffee table.

Extra Comfort

Keeping extra throw pillows and throws on hand means that you can easily switch up the look of your Moroccan-inspired patio.
