Variegated Ligustrum
USDA Zones: 7 to 10
Plant type: evergreen shrub
Apparently not invasive like the species, this version of the dense and excessively common hedge material is a nice departure. It matures into a very broad, tall shrub, up to 12 feet high and wide (and maybe more in both dimensions), with creamy-white variegation in the leaves. Small whitish flowers appear in mid- to late spring. Functions well as a screen and as cover for birds. Takes pruning well but, if you have the space, let it develop into its natural broad-rounded shape. Also looks lovely limbed up into a tree.
Variegated ligustrum adapts to a wide variety of soils, except for permanently wet ones. Tolerant of salt.
