Succulent-Filled Slate Trough

Topped with slate chips, this trough mirrors a mountain scree. Plant the container in situ in a sunny site because it will be heavy when filled. Use specialist nurseries for a wide plant choice.

Time to Complete: 1-1/2 hours

Materials Needed:

  • trough
  • broken clay pot pieces
  • gravel
  • soil-based potting mix
  • horticultural sand
  • slate chips
  • ice plant (Delosperma harazianum)
  • Spanish draba (Draba hispanica )
  • cutleaf alpine fleabane (Erigeron compositus var. discoideus)
  • sea lavender (Limonium bellidifolium)
  • sticky polemonium (Polemonium viscosum)
  • Saxifraga juniperifolia
  • moss campion (Silene acaulis)
  • Jones' Townsend daisy (Townsendia jonesii)

Prepare the Trough

Cover the drainage holes at the bottom of the trough with clay pieces, then add a 2-inch layer of gravel. Top up the trough, using a free-draining medium such as soil for cacti or a mixture of soil and sand. Leave 2 inches between the rim and the surface of the soil.

Add Slate and Plants

Top off the trough with slate chips, pushing them into the soil for stability, and leave spaces for the plants. Water the plants and plant them in the gaps, making sure that their roots are covered with sand and soil mix. Water the plants thoroughly.
