The House

Built in: 1923. Bought in: 2005. Size: 3,100 sq. ft. “The outside of this center hall Colonial looked totally different when we bought it. We changed the colors from gray and black to blue, rebuilt the porch and the front steps, and overhauled the landscaping,” say homeowners Nancy Dobras and Anne Geary.

Stained Cedar

The couple had the cedar siding coated in a durable blue stain and haven’t needed to touch up the color since.

Front Door

The House

Built in: 1919; Bought in: 2009. Size: 2,150 sq. ft. “The houses on our street are all different. The color and shape of this one — with its sharp angles and bay window — sold us. We couldn’t say no to the large front lawn or the sandstone path either,” say homeowners Patricia and Isaac Barley.

Walkway

Grass pokes through the curving sandstone path, which is laid in an irregular pattern for an imperfect look.

Front Door

It used to be white, but Isaac had always wanted a red door. “Painting it was one of the first things I did after we moved in,” he says. EXMA800 8-panel mahogany door, from $499, etodoors.com; Paint: 100 MPH by Behr

The House

Built in: 1962. Bought in: 2001. SIZE: 3,671 sq. ft. “We’ve always liked this neighborhood’s history. Our small cul-de-sac was built on former castle grounds. We were thrilled to score this American Colonial charmer and painted it yellow and red to make it even more inviting,” say homeowners Meg and Pat Duffy.

Landscaping

Meg and Pat revamped the front yard with spiky fountain grass and a now-soaring birch tree.

Plus, we appreciated the architectural details, like the eyelid dormer, the trellis, and the cedar shake siding,” say homeowners Renée and Jim Nieberding.

Trellis

The structure juts out over the doorway. It makes a great spot for hanging baskets filled with flowers.

Front Door

The couple replaced the door and added matching sidelights. The seeded glass provides privacy, and the dark finish stands out against the green cedar shakes. Bellante fiberglass door in medium oak finish with a wrought iron half lite, from $1,256, featherriverdoor.com for stores
