St. Louis, Missouri

Built in: 1943. Bought in: 2011 Size: 2,900 sq. ft. “Before moving here, we lived in a brand-new stucco house in Orlando with zero historic charm, so we were drawn to this neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and the traditional feel of this home,” say homeowners Allison and Steve Williams.

Siding

The brick on the front of the house was painted to match the vinyl siding — a blue gray color that shifts depending on the light and time of day.

Front Door

The 1940s door is original to the house, but Allison chose the egg-yolk yellow paint after spying it on a neighbor’s house. “It pops whether there’s snow or greenery around it,” she says. There are so few of them in our area,”say homeowners Michael and Julia Artbauer.

Portico

Julia and Michael removed the shutters from the second-floor windows to draw attention to this architectural detail.

Front Door

Painting the frame of the storm door the same lobster orange as the main door keeps the focus on the unique trio of vertical windows. Custom Mid-Century 3-lite wood door with single-pane glass, from $795, doornmore.com; Paint: Celebration Orange by Glidden

Doormat

Seattle, Washington

Built in: 1927. Bought in: 2005. SIZE: 2,630 sq. ft. “We spotted a home painted this color a few neighborhoods away. We liked it so much that we left a note on the front door asking the owners if they would share it with us — and they did. Now people ask us the same thing!” say homeowners Shawna and Glenn Ader.

Walkway

An abundance of slightly wild-looking plants gives the house privacy on a busy street, while concrete pavers and bricks create a clean path to the door.

Front Door

Portland, Oregon

Built in: 1936. Bought in: 2007. Size: 2,600 sq. ft. “Our Tudor-style house was built by a well-known local architect, so we kept it the original white and made only a few small updates to the exterior, like adding black shutters and painting the siding khaki.” say homeowners Lynn and Steve Jackson.

Gables

Multiple gables with steeply pitched roofs are a classic Tudor detail. Painting one of them — along with the small dormer — tan calls attention to the peaks.
