Channeling one of my favorite collectibles and everyone else’s favorite feature film, my daughter’s donning the silly hair this Halloween. Troll hair is as identifiable as can be, and fortunately it’s both easy and inexpensive to make. Even if it isn’t Halloween, it's an easy costume accessory or kid’s party DIY project.

Materials and Tools

  • stiff headband
  • tulle netting, in various colors (1/4 yards each color)
  • scissors or a rotary cutter
  • felt in assorted colors and sizes
  • hot glue gun and sticks
  • hairspray

Cut Tulle

Trim the tulle lengthwise to create 2” strips, and cut them down further to roughly 2”x20” lengths.

Attach Tulle

Stack the tulle pieces in 3-4 layers, and form a slip knot in the middle. Slide the knot onto the headband, and tighten it down. The heavier tulle serves an important purpose with this accessory, so be sure to include at least one length of it in each knotted piece.

Repeat until the troll hair is sufficiently thick, and trim any straggler ends. Comb the tulle straight with your fingers, and use the heavier tulle to wrangle the lightweight pieces, which will flop around otherwise.

Add Felt

Next, make a flower with felt and fabric pieces, and hot glue in place at the base of the tulle.

Apply Hairspray

Give the tulle a gentle mist using hair spray to keep any everything in place. Once the hairspray cures, each piece is more flexible, and you’ll be able to perfect the upright troll hair that your kid (and your 1990s self) ever dreamt up.

Finish the Look

Pair the troll hair with a knee-length, flowy dress or any stretchy outfit, such as a leotard or a pair of stretch pants with a T-shirt. Glue an oversized jewel to the belly button on the outfit.
