All aglow! This deer adds some sparkle to the mantel.

Silhouettes are a wonderful way to create art. Silhouettes of any image can be done in many media such as paper and paint. Many years ago, silhouettes were the only way to capture a scene or a person's likeness. In America, they saw their heyday up until the mid 1800s when the camera was first introduced. Lately, we have seen a resurgence in the popularity of silhouettes from people to woodland creatures.

If you are following the silhouette trend, you probably can't help but notice that the male deer, a buck, seems to be quite a prevalent and trendy silhouette these days. Silhouettes of families are equally as popular and fun to create. For this craft, I decided to jazz things up a bit with glitter, another hot commodity in home goods. I thought that this would be the perfect way to create a beautiful and sparkly decorative canvas for the mantel this holiday season.

For the background, I decided to play with the texture of the paint a bit. I really love the grain of wooden planks, knots and all. The faux bois tool allows you to easily create the look of wood with just a few easy strokes. For the canvas,  I chose a very light colored paint named Champagne that was just perfect for the background. If you don't have a faux bois tool, try making a basket type of weave or one that mimics burlap by running the back of plastic fork tines along the canvas in vertical and horizontal lines.  There are no rules, just have fun and be creative. To make your own glitter deer silhouette, here's what you will need to get started.

Supply List:

  • 12" x 14" canvas
  • Glitter
  • Cardstock
  • Printed deer template (found in photo gallery below)
  • Paintbrush
  • Faux bois tool (optional)
  • Light colored acrylic paint
  • Clear crafting glue
  • Foam brush
  • Scissors

Make the Stencil

Trace the deer silhouette onto the cardstock and cut it out again. The thick cardstock will serve as your stencil that can be reused.

Center the Deer

Center the deer on the dried painted canvas like so. You can face the deer in either direction.

Add Glue

With a foam brush, dab clear glue over the entire body of the deer. Be sure to get all the nooks and crannies in the antlers. I advise coating the deer with glue twice.

Sprinkle Away

Using the color of your choice, sprinkle the entire silhouette with glitter. Carefully remove the stencil and allow everything to dry in place. Once dry, shake off excess glitter over a garbage can.

Deck the Halls

Add this deer to your mantle for a bit of unexpected holiday sparkle. You can create an entire deer family with the silhouette provided. To make a female deer, simply remove the antlers. To make fawns, shrink down the size of the silhouette template.
