Festive Sculptures

Topiary trees are perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, and depending on the shapes you create, these topiaries could even be showcased all year long.

Tools + Materials

You'll need: 12x36x2-inch sheets of Styrofoam; decorative moss; hot glue gun; hot glue sticks; tree branches; hack saw; metallic push pins; planters (any material); floral foam bricks; pea gravel; marker; utility knife.

Cut Foam + Add Moss

Mark sheet of Styrofoam to the intended shape of the topiary using marker, then cut out with utility knife. Next, add clumps of moss to the Styrofoam, securing them in place with a glue gun.

Add Push Pins

Break up the moss by adding metallic push pins. To ensure the push pins don't loosen, add an extra layer of security with the glue gun.

Cut Branch to Size

Gather branches from your yard, then mark and cut them to size using a marker and hack saw. With the hack saw placed at an angle across the branch, cut it to size, creating two sharply pointed ends.

Add Branch to Foam

Insert one of the sharply pointed ends of the branch into the bottom of the moss-covered foam.

Stack Foam Bricks

To create a stand for the branches, sandwich two foam bricks together and secure them with hot glue.

Fill Planter

Place foam bricks inside a planter. Next, add weight by filling planter approximately 1/3 full with pea gravel.

Insert Branch

Push down on the branch until it's securely fit into the foam bricks. Once it's standing up straight, place the topiary in its proper place.

Ready to Display

Craft topiaries of varying heights and sizes to create an eye-catching vignette.
