When your fireplace isn’t in use, place this customized screen on the hearth. It not only adds a dash of fun color, but it also helps to stop drafts.

Materials Needed

  • measuring tape
  • plywood (home improvement store will cut to size)
  • newspaper
  • vinyl letters
  • paint
  • paint brush
  • prefabricated pine shelf brackets
  • screws
  • drill

Instructions

1. Measure the dimensions of your firebox. Have a home improvement store cut a piece of plywood just slightly larger than the dimensions. We used a 30” x 24” piece of plywood.

2. Place the plywood on newspaper in a well-ventilated area. Securely affix vinyl letters (find them at vinylwallexpressions.com) to the plywood, pressing down firmly so that paint won’t seep behind the letters. Paint the plywood. (We used Cadmium Orange Hue 2 by Liquitex.) While the paint is still wet, remove the vinyl letters, using tweezers if necessary. Let dry.

3. Stand the plywood upright. To create supports, screw prefab pine shelf brackets to the screen. The size of the screen will determine the size of the brackets—you want brackets large enough that the screen won’t topple over. We used 5” x 6¼” brackets.
