Spider Web Halloween Pillow Step 6

A spider web pillow and spider silhouettes make a creepy and fun Halloween decoration. Fuzzy yarn on gray wool fabric is used to make this creepy (but cute) Halloween pillow. This project involves basic machine and hand sewing, so it's a snap to make.

Materials Needed:

  • 3/4 yard of gray wool fabric
  • ruler
  • marker
  • sharp scissors
  • fuzzy white yarn
  • white cotton all-purpose thread
  • dark gray cotton all-purpose thread
  • pins
  • sewing machine
  • all-purpose needle
  • 18" x 18" pillow insert
  • plastic spiders (optional)

Measure and Cut Fabric

Using a ruler and a marker, measure and mark two 18-1/2" x 18-1/2" squares of wool fabric (Image 1). Cut out both squares with sharp scissors (Image 2).

Tack Yarn in Place

String three pieces of white fuzzy yarn across a piece of fabric that will be the pillow front, and arrange them so they are crossed in the middle (Image 1). With a sewing needle and all-purpose white thread, tack yarn into place at the pillow's edges and center point (Images 2 and 3).

Create Web

Starting at the outside and working toward the middle, create a web by tacking yarn into place at each intersection. Continue all the way to center of web, and trim excess yarn. Tack down any yarn pieces that are not lying flat against the wool.

Pin and Sew Pillow

Place web-covered fabric right side down on the second piece of wool (Image 1). Line up edges and pin in place (Image 2). Sew around perimeter of pillow, leaving approximately 1/4-inch seam allowances (Image 3). Also, leave a 6- to 8-inch opening at bottom of pillow to insert pillow form (Image 4). Remove pins, and turn pillow cover right side out.

Insert Form and Sew Closed

Gently insert pillow form in cover, making sure it fills cover to each corner. Fold raw edges of opening inside pillow cover and pinch together, pinning it shut. Use a whipstitch to sew edges closed with an all-purpose sewing needle and dark gray all-purpose cotton thread. Remove pins and trim any loose threads.

Tip: Decorate with plastic spiders to bring life to the web.
