In the simplest terms, "birthing" a quilt means binding it pillowcase-style. Here's how to do it:

1.  Layer the quilt top and backing, right sides together, with a layer of batting on top.

2.  Sew a 3/4-inch seam allowance all the way around the quilt, leaving enough of an opening to fit your hand in.

3.  Invert the whole sandwich -- quilt top, backing and batting -- right side out.

4.  Hand-stitch the opening closed.
