Glass Corner Shelves

A glass corner shelf offers a simple surface on which to place a single piece of artwork or special accessory. Follow these step-by-step instructions.

Materials and Tools:

1x2 poplar lumber
miter saw
router table
1/4"-thick glass
drill
1/2" spade bit
self-anchoring Molly bolts
wooden buttons
primer
paint
paintbrushes
220-grit sandpaper
level
awl

Steps:

1. Cut one piece of poplar 16 inches long and another 15-1/4 inches long using a miter saw. Make a groove to hold the glass by passing the brackets over a 1/4-inch straight bit on the router table. Make a couple passes to bring the depth to 3/8 inch. Set the guard on the router table to cut the groove 1/4 inch down from the top of the brackets.

2. Sand the brackets and remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag. Prime and paint the brackets and wooden buttons as desired. Let dry.

3. Mark a level line where the brackets will go, and then hold the longer one in position. Use a power drill and the spade bit to drill pilot and countersink holes at the same time (two on each piece). Repeat this process with the other bracket. Mark the placement of the holes using an awl pushed through the pilot holes and into the wall. Set the brackets aside, and then insert self-anchoring Molly bolts into the wall in the location of the holes.

4. Start the screws in the brackets, allowing the screw tips to extend out the back just enough to find the opening in the Molly bolts, and set the bracket in place. Drive in the screws.

5. Hide the holes by pushing wooden buttons over the screw openings. These can be popped out if the shelf needs to be removed. Insert the glass shelf (have a glass shop cut the desired shape and polish the edges).
