Materials Needed:

  • approximately 60 sheets of letter-sized, undyed, recycled paper divided into 12 piles of 5 sheets of paper: each pile is then folded in half to make a "folio"
  • pin
  • linen thread and darning needle
  • strip of muslin cloth at least as long as the folded edge of the folio and as wide as the stack of folios
  • eco-friendly adhesive glue
  • 2 rectangles of recycled cardboard cut to the same size as the folded folios, and 1 rectangle cut the same size as the muslin cloth
  • old, pretty recycled fabric cut just slightly larger than a sheet of paper
  • 1 illustrated page from an old, unwanted book
  • 2 sheets of brightly colored recycled letter-sized paper, each folded in half

Step 1

Line up the 12 folios of paper, with folds on the same side. Make 6 evenly spaced holes in each folio with a pin, making sure the holes line up when all 12 folios are stacked. Sew the folios together with linen thread, using a running stitch.

Step 2

Cut the piece of muslin cloth so that it is the same length and width as the joined folios. Then glue the cloth over the stitched folio folds.

Step 3

Glue the cardboard rectangles to the fabric, placing the thinnest rectangle in the middle and leaving a slight gap between the pieces. Fold down the fabric edges and glue them. Glue the illustrated page half over the cover.
