This fragrant body lotion is perfect for year round homemade gift giving.

My hands will never be soft and supple. I work too hard with them, wash them too much and tinker in the garden too much. I wouldn't want it any other way, but sometimes, I need to apply a really nice, rich moisturizer that my hands are dying to soak up. It's not uncommon for me to have to apply three layers of lotion in one sitting. I thought that there had to be a better way. Perhaps, if I made my own all-natural body butter, I could use up less product, eliminate the "extra" ingredients, and apply a product that was beneficial for my skin.

I love using coconut oil for cooking. I even rub it on the wattles and combs of my backyard chickens to prevent frostbite. Most recently, as I worked the coconut oil into their combs and wattles I noticed that my hands too were reaping the benefits. They were softer and much less dry.

I came in from the coop and headed straight to the kitchen. I began tinkering with products from the natural food store. Finally, I came up with a body butter that smells just like those chocolate caramel coconut cookies sold by those girls in green uniforms! My nose was in heaven and so was my skin. I quickly discovered that a little goes a long way.

The body butter immediately began to melt as I rubbed it into my skin. At first it seems oily. But I kept rubbing and realized that within no time, my skin had completely absorbed the body butter.

This body butter makes a great homemade gift for friends and relatives that could use a little bit of pampering. Just be sure to keep a little for yourself!

Make Your Own Chocolate Coconut Body Butter

Treat yourself or a loved one to this homemade beauty treatment that smells sinfully good!

Gather Your Supplies

For this body butter, you will need: measuring cups/1/2 cup cocoa butter/3/4 cup coconut oil/1 tablespoon jojoba oil/essential oil of your choice (optional)/glass bowls/very hot water/ ice/kitchen mixer/spoon/storage container/ribbon/label.

Like Butter

The cocoa butter and the coconut oil at room temperature may be solid in form and too hard to whip. If so, they will need to be softened. To do so, place the cocoa butter in a small glass bowl. In a larger bowl, add hot water. Place the bowl with the cocoa butter inside the bowl with the water.

Melt Completely

The cocoa butter will begin to melt immediately. Continue stirring until the cocoa butter is entirely melted into a liquid. Remove from the hot water bath. Repeat the melting process for the coconut oil if necessary.

Like Creamy Peanut Butter

Place the bowl with the melted cocoa butter in a bowl filled with ice. Stir it constantly until it reaches the consistency of creamy peanut butter. Repeat this process as well if you had to melt the coconut oil.

Whip It Good

Add the cocoa butter, coconut oil and jojoba oil to the mixing bowl as well as a few drops of your essential oil (optional). With a kitchen mixer on high, whip the ingredients for about 5 minutes until light fluffy peaks are formed.

Package Your Lotion

Add the whipped body butter to a container of your choice.

Label and Ribbon

Directions for use: A little goes a long way. Place a small dab on your finger. Once it reaches your skin it will begin to immediately melt. Continue rubbing it into your skin and be amazed as your skin soaks up this fragrant, nourishing lotion.
