How to Make a Herbin' Orange Cocktail

Looking for a winter cocktail that is high in vitamin C and garden goodness? This one has a complex and balanced range of flavors that give it a tasty kick.

Ingredients

For two cocktails:

  • 4 ounces gin (A highly herbal brand such as The Botanist works well.)
  • 2 ounces Aperol (an Italian aperitif)
  • 4 ounces fresh squeezed orange juice (two medium sized organic oranges)
  • 2 fresh sage leaves for muddling and 2 small leaves for garnish

Even in cold climates we’re likely to have fresh sage from the garden until the New Year. This herb contains assorted antioxidants, volatile oils and flavonoids. According to some studies, sage is also a memory enhancer. But in this cocktail we’re going after seasonality and flavor. Because it’s aromatic and a bit peppery it marries well with the bitterness of the Aperol and sweetness of the orange juice.

Squeeze the oranges and measure out the juice. Put two large sage leaves into a mason jar and muddle using a wooden spoon or cocktail muddler.

Add juice, gin, Aperol and four or five ice cubes to the jar and shake vigorously. Strain and pour into two glasses. Garnish with a fresh sage leaf.

The Garden Lady believes that cocktails should be simple to make, avoid day-ahead preparations, and whenever possible use organic herbs and vegetables from the garden.
