Statement Color

The innovative color palette for this Craftsman home combines navy blue, white and pink for a look that feels both masculine and feminine at the same time. “The whole idea was to pack the exterior with colors that people would really stop and look at and also think about,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Improved Curb Appeal

New sod and strategic plantings help transform the front yard and curb appeal of this Craftsman. “The house really didn’t have any landscaping before, it was very sparse and what was there was not native,” says project manager Scott Branscom.

Welcome Inside

The Craftsman’s historic windows and front door were kept in the same location. The front door was sanded, patched and painted millennial pink to make visitors feel welcome.

Open Gable Roof

The front porch of this Craftsman has an open gable roof painted white that adds strong architectural interest to this classic home with a modern sensibility.

Right This Way

Since existing stairs failed to meet code, concrete stairs now provide a sturdy way to lead visitors up to the front door of this open and airy home with a clever use of space. The classic house had been remodeled several times before, and was a duplex before being renovated back into a single-family home.

Secure Home

This yard sign lets everyone know the home is protected by a top-of-the-line security system with wireless technology.

Classic Craftsman Details

The columns and brick on the front of this home built in 1925 are existing to keep with local preservation codes, but some repair was done to the base for durability. A light stain was also added to the brick to make it appear more uniform.

First Impression

A selection of ceramic and resin pots and planters with magnolia trees, Creeping Jenny and assorted pink flowers flank each side of the front door, to make a nice first impression for this reimagined home.

Colors That Pop

The white trim used around the front door and historic windows makes the navy blue and pink colors of the home and front door pop.

Lounge Space

One of the two three-seat outdoor sofas used for lounging on the front porch sits to the left of front door. A screen with planter boxes and climbing vines was placed behind the sofa for more privacy in this urban setting.

Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug

Two 8x10 hand-hooked indoor/outdoor polypropylene area rugs add color and pattern to this well-detailed front porch.

Welcoming Front Door

Repairs were made to the existing front door to take care of dents and dings before it was repainted, and the door hardware was updated. The existing sidelight windows were retained and the frames painted to match the new white trim of the home.

Classic Door Bell

An existing operable doorbell to the right of the front door fits with the classic style of this historic Craftsman.

Stylish Sconces

Two one-light LED outdoor wall sconces with an old bronze finish illuminate both sides of the front door.

Artistic Neighborhood

The creative color scheme and the modern furniture with a relaxed vibe chosen for the front porch fits the artistic Fourth and Gill neighborhood that surrounds this home, located near downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee campus. Two Mongolian lamb fur throw pillows in a rose blush add cozy comfort to the seating area.

Have a Seat

A three-seat outdoor sofa, two white fabric and aluminum outdoor chairs and a glass top outdoor coffee table create an inviting seating area to the right of the front door.

Cozy Space

This side of the front porch also has a screen with planter box, this one has jasmine vines that add more privacy and a sense of coziness for the seating area.

Versatile Evergreen

Tall and slender Japanese Yews add height and provide privacy as they grow in front of seating area. An irrigation system keeps the flower and plants in the upgraded front yard regularly watered.

Patterned Pillows

Blue and white indoor/outdoor throw pillows with an abstract puzzle pattern add color and a pop of pattern to the sofas and chairs, paired with a cotton and wool rose pink throw pillow with textured pattern.

Fresh and New

The modern furniture and different shades of pink and blush used for the front porch and landscaping offers contrast for the traditional architecture of this Craftsman home, to create a fresh look that feels current.

Pink Begonias

The pink begonias used in the front yard landscaping compliment the color of the home’s eye-catching front door and blush accents used in the home.

Cold Hardy

The front yard’s versatile Japanese Yews with dark green leaves are cold hardy and can be pruned and shaped to form a uniform hedge.

Charming Rain Chain

An aluminum rain chain with a contemporary multi-cube design and black coat that helps protect against corrosion and rusting makes a charming addition to the front yard of this Craftsman home located in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Color Contrast

The home’s historic wood siding was preserved keeping with local regulations, with many layers of paint scraped off and damaged areas repaired and repainted before the update was complete. The white trim provides just the right contrast for the navy blue siding and the brick along the base of the porch.

Up-To-Date Look

The combination of a striking color scheme and improved landscaping give this Craftsman home an up-to-date look that still respects the architecture and history of the house.
