Double the Fun

“The overall design approach for the master suite was to double the use,” explains interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “It opens onto the back deck, making the size of the room double by carrying the same color scheme from inside to the adjacent outdoor space.”

Home Is Where the Art Is

Vintage-inspired furnishings and architectural details are accented by an abstract art piece on display.

Charming Accessories

A simple antique console table between the master bathroom and master closet, showcases a thoughtful collection of accessories packed with personality and charm.

Stylish Storage

Vintage-inspired chests flank the bed instead of nightstands to offer up plenty of storage and infuse warm wood tones into the room.

Upcycled Details

An antique milk container reimagined as a lamp tells a design story of the eclectic Asheville scene.

Nailed It

The navy wingback platform bed features nickel nail heads along the wings for a shimmering touch.

Puppy Love

Asheville is an animal friendly town, therefore a custom painting with a playful dog in boots adds a pop of personality.

Tons of Texture

“Because I have a thing against drywall, I love all of my wall surfaces to be something more architectural,” says Brian. “We added custom-built millwork that has a 1/8 inch recess in between each of the 8 ½ inch boards to create a clean farmhouse line throughout.”

Wow-Worthy Bedding

A crisp white cotton sateen duvet and shams, are framed with three navy slate and platinum stripes. Buffalo check and masculine, striped pillows in a coordinating color scheme add layers of interest.

Indoor and Outdoor Appeal

“We added railing up above so we could hang outdoor drapery, because I really wanted to unite the two spaces with the same color palette,” explains Brian. “It softens the edges of the outside deck, and adds privacy.”

For the Love of Art

“I love the idea of having mismatched art or a gallery saloon wall in a farmhouse-inspired room,” says Brian. "I wanted to minimize the presence of the big television by surrounding it with vintage pieces."

Luxury Underfoot

A Pakistani hand-knotted red and ivory bokhara wool rug commands attention and tells a story of custom craftsmanship. These tribal bokhara rugs are made by nomads in Pakistan who spend years weaving each intricate detail.

Eclectic Entertainment Center

Under the television sits three bunching chests made of industrial steel with antique mirror fronts.

Around the Area Finds

A trip to Asheville’s antique markets produced a collection of medieval-inspired helmets.

Charming Reading Nook

A reading nook showcasing an antique compass and Danish modern walnut chair upholstered in a rust orange fabric, elevates the room’s transitional design approach.

Farm Features

A focus on rustic materials extends to the nightstand, where a custom-made farm goat and a reclaimed wagon wheel lamps draw the eye.

Architectural Interest

This sloped ceiling is a charming architectural feature that creates coziness and warmth.

Closet Case

A walk-in closet, at the entry to the master bedroom, features both shelf space and hanging rods. A playful wardrobe and accessories echo the vibrant color scheme in the adjacent space.

Inviting Entryway

For privacy, a white door with custom hardware separates the master bedroom from the kitchen. Pops of blue and white reference the color scheme found throughout the home.

Thoughtful Touches

Continuing a design focus on modern Americana, a dresser displays a petite bouquet of cotton and a charming squirrel sculpture.

Red, White and Blue

“To add a touch of modern Americana, I covered the windows in this red, white, and blue gingham,” says Brian.

Casual Seating

Carving out an area for reading and reflection, plush blue blankets cozy up with a guitar and red rain boots for a nod to the artistic, outdoorsy vibe of Asheville.

Stylish Solution

Hats on display are a stylish and clever grab-and-go option for working in the yard or sitting on the deck.

Decked Out

The master bedroom offers its own private access to the back deck. Glass double doors and custom drapery, drawn during daylight hours, reduce heat gain and improve interior comfort.

Winning Combination

“Whoever lives here is going to be a person with a lot of layers to their personality,” says Brian. “I made sure everything had a nice mix.”
