HGTV Smart Home 2013: Kids Bedroom Pictures

Fun and youthful, the home's second guest bedroom celebrates life at the beach with artwork inspired by location, tropical-print fabrics and a color palette drawn from sea shades.

Inspired by the rich colors and patterns of the Mediterranean, a machine-woven area rug anchors the space and serves as a springboard for the room's saturated color palette.

Blue and Turquoise Cottage-Style Bedroom

An industrial-style demilune table stands in contrast to the room's cottage-inspired furnishings. A handmade glass lamp provides the needed focal point.

Maple skateboards, sourced locally, double as artwork. "House planner Jack Thomasson and I were trying to figure out what to put in that room to loosen it up and make it not so put together," says Linda.

Blue Coastal-Inspired Sitting Area

A three-tiered chest carves out a focal area and reading nook. Beachy whimsical artwork, including an original acrylic sea life painting by "island impressionist" Kathy Frosio, keep the design focus lighthearted.

Happy (and durable) Floridian-print fabric, paired with stripes and solid hues, contributes to the gender-neutral room design.

Coastal Kids Bedroom With Tropical-Print Fabrics

Replace skateboards with traditional artwork and dress the cottage-style twin poster beds in classic fabrics, and the space becomes ideal for adult guests.

A custom-made duvet, backed in linen, provides an extra layer of warmth on cool beach nights.

Kid's Contemporary Desk With Yellow Corkboard

A closet turns homework center with the addition of a desktop, corkboard wall and beach-inspired artwork.

Black-and-white photographs of house planner Jack Thomasson's relatives lend a personal touch to the space. "It's a way to keep yourself in touch with your family," says Linda. "It doesn't have to be great photography, it just has to be things that are important to you."

Stored in the closet and close at hand, allergen- and dust mite-resistant pillows — filled with micro-cushions — feel similar to down-filled pillows and provide optimum support for the head, neck and shoulders.

An ottoman with the look of a weathered antique provides space to store books and toys and doubles as seating in the room's reading area.

"Wonderful colors, a great view, fun fabrics, and furnishings and accessories pull together to create a bedroom that works in many ways," says Linda.
