Maple skateboards, sourced locally, double as artwork. "House planner Jack Thomasson and I were trying to figure out what to put in that room to loosen it up and make it not so put together," says Linda.

A three-tiered chest carves out a focal area and reading nook. Beachy whimsical artwork, including an original acrylic sea life painting by "island impressionist" Kathy Frosio, keep the design focus lighthearted.
Black-and-white photographs of house planner Jack Thomasson's relatives lend a personal touch to the space. "It's a way to keep yourself in touch with your family," says Linda. "It doesn't have to be great photography, it just has to be things that are important to you."
Stored in the closet and close at hand, allergen- and dust mite-resistant pillows — filled with micro-cushions — feel similar to down-filled pillows and provide optimum support for the head, neck and shoulders.
An ottoman with the look of a weathered antique provides space to store books and toys and doubles as seating in the room's reading area.
