Bold Exterior

Black paint with charcoal trim adds drama and transforms the exterior of this contemporary home built in 1974, previously painted a neutral tan brown color. “To make sure the house fit in with the really nice modern homes up in this part of the country, we wanted to go with a black exterior,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Updated Yard

A new privacy fence on the left side of the property and improved plantings are part of this updated front yard that now has a cohesive look that seamlessly blends the home into the natural surroundings of this idyllic Gig Harbor, Washington location.

Security Feature

A yard sign makes sure everyone knows this updated waterfront home is protected by a comprehensive, top-notch security system.

Beautiful First Impression

Right off the updated driveway, the entrance to the front door gives visitors an enticing glimpse at the stunning views that can be enjoyed from this one-of-a-kind waterfront remodel.

Front Door Planters

A pair of gray planters add a touch of greenery to each side of the home’s dramatic and upgraded front door entrance.

Dramatic Entrance

The new anodized aluminum swing front door with glass panels allows natural light inside and offers a look at the amazing views enjoyed from this home’s waterfront location. Large black porcelain pavers line the steps up to the front door and help define the entry.

Updated Landscaping

A variety of plants and flowers including hydrangeas, perennials and blue oat grass were planted in the updated front yard, including this section between the home’s front door and garage.

Wider View

This wider view shows the garage’s close proximity to the front door of the home, and the new full view glass doors on the garage.

Glamorous Garage Doors

Two full view garage doors with black anodized frames and tempered glass give the updated garage a serious sense of style. The garage was raised about three feet so the roofline would blend with the main roofline of the renovated house.

Keeping the Character

This image shows the view that greets guests from the home’s long driveway, before they make their way to the welcoming front door of this modernized home. “The whole idea was to take something and make it the best it could be architecturally without really changing its character,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Cohesive Look

Using the same pavers for both the driveway and walkway to the front door of the home creates a seamless and cohesive look that fits the modern style of the updated property.

Beauty and Durability

The permeable pavers that stand up to heavy traffic and allow good drainage that were used for the home’s updated driveway and walkway have chiseled textures and contours with random shapes and patterns with a trim detail.

A Perfect Set of Wheels

This all-new Honda Accord is apart of the HGTV Dream Home 2018 prize package. It's a combination of elegance and convenience, and it's the perfect set of wheels to zip around Gig Harbor or drive into Seattle for the day.

Muted Coastal Modern

A new matte black metal roof, a more streamlined profile and the bold black exterior all transformed this dated home and gave the structure a more modern look and feel.

Enjoy the Views

New vinyl windows were added, enlarged and raised to allow clear views from the front yard to the back of the property.

Stylish Siding

The home’s new siding that was painted black protects the structure and offers years of durability.

Side Yard Landscaping

Some maple trees and local plants that thrive in this coastal climate were added to the landscaping, including on the side of the home that extends off the front yard. Tall and majestic evergreen trees, one of the iconic symbols of the Pacific Northwest, were integrated into the updated landscaping.

Streamlined Profile

An existing odd-shaped, two-story tower in the foyer that served no real purpose was removed, which gave this updated livable coastal modern home a more streamlined profile.
