Great First Impressions: Mediterranean Tile Meets Metal

With Mediterranean tile and white walls, this living space from Studio Pali Fekete Architects echoes the design of others homes in Los Feliz, Calif. However, bronze sunshades give the structure an unexpected, contemporary touch, helping it stand out from the crowd.

Newly Constructed Two-Story Building at Historic Los Feliz Home

Across the courtyard from this historic, Los Feliz home is a newly constructed, two-story building that houses the family's garage and library. The building is protected from the sun by a sunshade that lets in just the right amount of light.

Newly Built Two Story Outbuilding Houses a Garage and a Private Library

Across the courtyard from the main house is a new, two-story construction. The first floor is home to a garage, while the second floor houses a private library. The most distinct feature of this building is the metal screen facade, which opens like shutters for a clear view of the property, or can be shut for privacy and protection from the afternoon sun.

Metal Sun Shade on Two-Story Outbuilding

The screen facade of this two-story construction is made from bronze anodized aluminum with patterned cutouts that are a nod to the original home's precast concrete window grilles. Though this is a contemporary design for this historic site, the building's form and exterior materials match the historic home.

Two-Story Outbuilding Houses Garage and Library

The outbuilding of this historic Los Feliz home is multifunctional. The ground floor of the building plays host to the garage, which contains the family's collection of cars, while the second floor is home to the family's library, which is complete with reading nooks, a bathroom, a conference table and storage areas.

Reading Nooks in Second Floor Library

The library on the second floor of this detached garage has several reading nooks tucked between aisles of books. These nooks have plush leather couches, ottomans and chairs that are perfect for curling up with a good book, while modern pendant lights illuminate the spaces from above.

Metal Cutout Sunshades Allow Dappled Light Into Second Floor Library

As the afternoon sun pours onto this two-story building, the metal cutout sunshade helps to filter the light that makes it into the library. This helps regulate the temperature in the space, but it also dapples the library with an elegant glow that allows readers plenty of light to explore their favorite books.

Library with Metal Cutout Sunshade

On the front of the detached garage, metal sunshades with cutouts protect the library from the afternoon sun by filtering sunlight through the cutouts to provide just the right amount of light, giving the library space a warm, elegant feeling.

Reading Table in Elegant, Modern Library

The table in this library is nestled between two book shelves. The steel doors allow in light to the space, which gives homeowners the perfect place to read. This space could also serve as a conference table or an elegant, unorthodox space to have an intimate dinner party.

Arches Allow for a Clear View of This Historic Home's First Floor

Designers continued the arches throughout the bottom floor. These arches help the spaces of this historic home's first floor feel more bright and open. The arches also allow for a clear view from one end of the space to the other. Here, we see the dining area, home office and state of the art kitchen that have been updated to have all the modern luxuries while maintaining the historic feeling of the home.
