As you work with wet mortar and heavy stones, the stones will tend to sag. To prevent this, drill holes and place two screws underneath each stone, creating a ledge for the stone to rest on while the mortar is drying.

Materials and Tools:

stone
mortar
hammer drill
set screws with anchors
rubber mallet

Steps:

1. Mark where you would like the stone to be placed with pencil. Then make two marks underneath the stone to indicate where the screws will go.

2. Use a hammer drill to drill into the wall at those marks. (The hammer drill hammers into the wall while it drills at the same time.) Drill at least three inches into the support wall.

3. Screw in the set screws with anchors.

4. When the screws are in place, place mortar on the back of the stone and place it on the wall and resting on the screws. Tap with a rubber mallet to secure the stone.
